Featuring some of the winners of
the VC's excellence in learning and teaching awards....

Opening introduction Ruth Pilkington talked about the PRF and the UCLan Pedagogic Research Rainbow taken from the Impact: Pedagogic Research publication and how we support everyone interested in learning and teaching.

Debbie Williams talked about Innovation in
teaching and assessment- Realistic Working Environment. they have been all over the world with students from various disciplines all working on creating and publishing a book. Letters to Africa was their first and highly successful publication, they have since worked on 2 more books and have another 8 in production. This cooperative working environment with tangible outputs have been enjoyable for all involved and have led to students getting jobs in industry, some have moved to Africa to work as there experiences there were life changing.

Rob Smith talked about research -informed
teaching and learning and his young researchers project in Chemistry, where undergraduates spend time in the lab outside of class to work on solutions real world problems. Some of the students manage to get summer research internships from the Centre for Research-informed Teaching to enable the staff and students to work full time over the summer to conduct research and publish papers.

Due to a last minute cancellation the computing team Nicky Danino, Lesley May and Nick Mitchell stepped in to talk about their highly successful four week challenge project. This project runs a whole module in 4 weeks full time straight from when the 1st years start the course. It is a fully immersive experience with workshops and help sessions and the students are sorted into groups of 6 and given an app to develop and market in this time. Competition is fierce as there is a leader board updated regularly, but students get points for being helpful and developing resources the other teams can use. The reports from the students are overwhelmingly positive, although it is hard work, they get to make friends, share their knowledge and ask for help in this time so the rest of the course is not quite so daunting.

The last session was a Demonstration by Juliet Ibbotson on Sage Research Methods The University has a subscription to this useful service, which can give you definitions of research terms, provide research materials, and gives you access to relevant books, book chapters, dictionary and encyclopedia entries, videos, or journal articles from over 175,000 pages of renowned SAGE content in research methods. The research methods map is a very useful tool and it will give you a definition of a method or procedure but you can also find related methods and the key theorists in that area.

We closed with a thank you to all the staff who came and we even had lecturers from our new associate school at Myerscough college, who were really interested in the amazing work done at the university and wanted to know how to get more involved.

Hopefully next years event will be even more successful.Helen LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10649368919933241222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7283291617085065233.post-40846135778022652452013-03-22T11:59:00.002+00:002013-05-10T10:42:36.802+01:00#badacademiaThis letter appeared in the Independent. It raises several concerns about Gove's new curriculum
It was also signed by over 100 academics from universities across the country many of whom are experts in education and have published multiple books and papers on education.

This PRF session featured a talk by Anna Hunter who used mobile learning and TweetDeck to encourage engagement in the classroom. Students were expected to set up a twitter account if they didn't already have one by the next session and bring a smartphone or laptop....

She set up hashtags e.g. #EN1216d #fanficwhat #fanficwhere #fanficwho based around specific questions or tasks which the class used to tweet answers to those questions. A Twitter wall was displayed using the projector in the classroom, so students could see the live tweets appearing on the board.

They were encouraged to see themselves not only as consumers of knowledge and texts, but active participants in knowledge exchange and creation.

The students really took to this activity really well. even those who didn't normally engage or were quite shy.

Outcomes

Students keen to engage in debate

Semi-permanent record of comments

Discussion easier to manage

Fosters highly collaborative learning environment

140 character limit enforces concise response

Development of learning community outside of classroom

Positive student feedback

Anna was inspired by this video on Youtube: The Twitter Experiment - Twitter in the Classroom by Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas.

Hopefully this will help inspire you to think about using social media to engage students in live debate.

The computer based and physical tasks set for the students, involved much more than you would ever get out of a pen and paper exam, and the students got much more out of it. The study was conducted by the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress)

"Science education is not just about learning facts in a classroom—it’s about doing activities where students put their understanding of science principles into action. That’s why two unique types of activity-based tasks were administered as part of the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) science assessment. In addition to the paper-and-pencil questions, fourth-, eighth-, and twelfth-graders also completed hands-on and interactive computer tasks. These tasks help us understand not only what students know, but how well they are able to reason through complex problems and apply science to real-life situations. While performing the interactive computer and hands-on tasks, students manipulate objects and perform actual experiments, offering us richer data on how students respond to scientific challenges." ( NCES 2012)

What they found was, we are missing a trick when it comes to critical thinking. Students can observe and report straight forward data successfully, but struggled when they had to manipulate variables or explain results. This seems to me like a problem we created because of the way we primarily assess students. Exams are fine for rote learning and regurgitating, and students had no problems with that type of activity, but when asked to employ critical thinking skills and develop arguments, then they struggle.

What we should be doing is engaging the students in assessment and use it as a tool for learning not just measuring progress. We have the means and technology like never before and we would be remiss in our duties as educators if we did not grasp this opportunity with both hands. This kind of assessment could be done in any subject with a little tweaking.

The power is in our hands. Do we want our students and future leaders to be well informed critical thinkers with enhanced problem solving capabilities, or do we just want students who can memorise facts and not understand them.Helen LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10649368919933241222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7283291617085065233.post-80558601269694916832012-09-13T14:19:00.000+01:002012-09-13T14:19:48.048+01:00Other kinds of "impact" REF 2014David Willetts speech-at UUK conference today was interesting for many reasons. The biggest 'impact' for me was where he was talking about what will be REF'able and how research will be assessed for the Research Excellence Framework 2014.
The most surprising thing was that you could include unpublished work and journal impact factors would have no relevance!

"The REF is an assessment of research excellence. It is not about "journal rankings" or "journal impact factors". Whether the research output has been published in an open access journal, a traditional publication, or even if it hasn't been published in any journal at all, this does not affect the assessment of its quality in the REF. REF panels will not make use of “journal impact factors”, rankings or lists, nor the perceived standing of the publisher, in assessing the quality of research outputs. An underpinning principle of the REF is that all types of research and all forms of research output shall be assessed on a fair and equal basis by experts in the relevant disciplines."

I wonder if this will actually be the case when the panel is assessing research.
From the REF Panel working methods document:

"REF2: Details of publications and other forms of assessable output which they have produced during the publication period (1 January 2008 to 31 December 2013). "

So they will be assessing publications, but I wonder what they mean by "other forms of assessable output"

"Panels have been instructed to define criteria and adopt assessment processes that enable them to recognise, and treat on an equal footing, excellence in research across the spectrum of applied, practice-based, basic and strategic research, wherever that research is conducted; and for identifying excellence in different forms of research endeavour including interdisciplinary and collaborative research, while attaching no greater weight to one form over another." p6

This sounds like a tricky job for the assessment panels if they are not allowed to use journal impact metrics. which to be fair are flawed anyway. I'm wondering if they will be looking at any other forms of impact metrics out there at the moment, or do they just use peer review?
Whatever happens they will probably change it again for the next REF equivalent, so we will have to start all over again. Watch out for the next crazy train.

The problem with the current system is that research is only rewarded if it has REF'able impact. There have been many criticisms of this system, non more poignant than this paper, on evaluating how we evaluate.
For my contribution to this debate, I agree that there is much more to research and being an academic than the 'publish or perish' mentality. Many academics do fantastic outreach work which has amazing impact on local communities, or put enormous amounts of effort into helping their students succeed by researching and reflecting on how they teach and how they can best enable all their students to learn and grow. Teaching in itself is not rewarded enough and the fantastic research done by the non Russell group universities tends to be overlooked when government or RCUK grants are being handed out. Open access is a way that under fair conditions can enable access for everyone to publicly funded research. But again this news article shows that again elite Russell group institutions who already get more than their fair share of funding and grants are getting even more help to go open access. This article has it right in the reasons behind this dubious regime. Post 92s are very successful in widening participation and giving equality of opportunity for more to get into education from working class and ethnic backgrounds. Education should be a right not a privilege. The students at our university get a say in the research process, and many have taken part in real research and have even published papers before graduating, through fantastic projects like those in the Centre for Research-informed Teaching. We should embrace opening access to research and support those who take part in the research process whatever their background. Education and Research can only improve equality in our society, so help raise up everyone who has a passion for learning and applaud their commitment.

Anyone at the start of their career needs to be shown the ropes. But why is mentoring so important in HE?

"Mentoring does not have to be a formal and structured process. I consider a mentor to be someone that will listen and provide professional advice in an honest but supportive environment. a team of mentors, may be the most advantageous situation. In order for others to also build such a team then professional networking is essential in making these connections."sciencementor

This sounds like what we provide in the PRF here at Uclan. A supportive group of individuals who act as mentors, albeit informally. This kind of forum shares research, skills and offers opportunities for collaboration too. This kind of environment is essential to stop people getting disheartened with their research or their profession in general. Formal mentoring can fail because of a lack of clear direction or purpose from either the mentor or the mentee. These formal match ups are not always done with individuals in mind and both have to be willing to participate in the process. An assigned mentor is a good starting point but sometimes the informal voluntary route is the more effective one. A mentor does not have to be at your institution as various subject bodies can provide access to mentors, or you can connect with people at conferences or online.

Some good advice from ClaireVStocks "Mentees should have the opportunity to express what they're looking for in a mentor, and mentors should be able to define what help or advice they are willing/able to give."
It was a great event with many more people than we were expecting. Really positive feedback from participants...

Jean McNiff gave an inspiring keynote and the poster talks went really well, and prompted many discussions. See the blog for the posters from the event http://sharingpractice2012.blogspot.co.uk/ Which has had nearly 300 hits since it was set up a couple of days ago. Mind the Gap by Carol Tatham being the most popular on the blog so far.

The first session was a presentation by Mark Gilbert on Action theory and Assessment, linked to E-learning in Dentistry. Which was very interesting, and got a good response from the participants. The innovative aspect was in getting the students to design their own assessments based on a competency framework the staff had created.

We moved into a bigger room during the coffee break, where we had a presentation by Futures Anna Hunter on employability and the Futures award. The main issue they find is getting students to listen and engage early on in their degree as there are many opportunities that are not being taken up. This sparked a lively discussion on paid vs unpaid placements and internships. Also is it reasonable for students to get charged fees during a placement year or semester, especially if they don't get paid for the placement. A solution suggested was to gain additional course credit as a mode of payment and to justify course fees over this time.

The final session was on Social media and interactive teaching. Where I demonstrated the various tools out there and my top 5 tips. I used this blog as an example of blogging and discussed the types of different blogging platforms out there and how you would use one. We used the twitter hashtag #teachingexchange to demonstrate twitter and used an example of how staff in the School of Built and Natural Environment are using twitter in their teaching. This sparked a debate on social media policy in the university and how careful you have to be to not give to much of yourself away online and that you need to behave appropriately regarding the platform you use and the audience you have.
We also agreed you can't force students to use these tools, or invade their space. It has to be voluntary, encourage them if they want to follow your twitter account or facebook group, but don't make it compulsory otherwise they wont engage. Not all social media can be or should be used for teaching, it depends on the subject and the students. You have to tailor it to the needs of your class. We also discussed how you can use twitter to get your research citation rates up by publicizing your research more widely. The uses of academic sites like Academia.edu and Mendeley were also touched upon, as only a few had heard of them. See previous post on Mendeley for a full review.

The feedback for the event was very positive, many stated their enjoyment and how they found it useful. We even had some international participants from a university in China, who said they have nothing like this back home and how useful it was to share practice like this.
Most universities now expect their teaching staff to gain a teaching qualification like the PGcert in HE within a couple of years of them starting in a post. Older lecturers have usually gotten away without having needed to purely because they have been in a institution so long it never came up. This would make it mandatory for everyone regardless of teaching experience.
The HEA is on board with this, stating that "professionalisation of teaching should be a shared goal across higher education in the UK"
What do you think, should every lecturer be made to have a teaching qualification? Should PhDs still be required as well ? PhD's are also preferred but not always mandatory, especially in professional/ vocational courses. Would you hire a good teacher to teach at a university who has a teaching qualification but no PhD? Would it be easier to integrate the two if both are going to be required? Provide options for a PhD with teaching qualification as well as the PhD purely for research?

"The Social Science Centre (SSC) provides an opportunity for students and academics to have a very special co-operative experience of higher education. All courses at SSC are taught and assessed at the same level as similar courses in mainstream universities in the UK. The courses are taught by experienced academics, including professors and lecturers with national and international reputations based on the quality of their scholarship in the social sciences."

Our previous post commented on the Free university of Liverpool which is limited in the number of courses it offers but started admissions for its foundation degree last year.

There are also plenty of online courses that offer their services for free the most famous being the OCW, and the most innovative being Udacity.

So despite some students being priced out of the market for formal degree courses there is plenty on offer for those who love to learn. The question now is will employers appreciate the new free courses if they develop and assess students as rigorously as the formal courses. If so then the more expensive elitist universities had better watch out!Helen LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10649368919933241222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7283291617085065233.post-13200130346722236382012-04-19T10:45:00.000+01:002012-04-23T08:58:10.577+01:00Refworks Vs Mendeley: The battle of the online reference managersI have been using Mendeley for a while now, and I find it easy to use and a great way to organise and share research. But then my University released access to Refworks and so I thought I would try it out and see if was as easy to use as Mendeley. This review is based on my experiences in using both platforms to organise my references....

2. Usability

Easy to use and import files either from your documents or from the web. Uses existing citation management links and imports to Mendeley, eg
BibTeX, RIS and EndNote™ XML files. Bulk upload options available. It will also keep track of any saved files in a specific folder and import new items automatically. It does not work with every academic database, but the only one I have had a problem with is Science Direct due to unknown file type.

Can use Import to Mendeley in all browsers to take web snapshots

Imports refs easily into word using plug in, no need to come out of Word but needs Mendeley desktop to be open.

Automatically reads pdfs and identifies the author, title, journal and other information. It flags up any that are not complete. Generally very good, but I have had some issues with more obscure journals. It is always worth double checking to make sure all the info is correct.

Can open PDFs and add notes and highlights.

Can easily create groups and share documents securely both in the desktop and web platforms. Has some issues adding tags to groups, not very intuitive.

3. Compatibility

It is compatible with all modern web browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome

Organize and create a personal database online – no more index cards to write out and organize. Everything is done automatically as you import the reference into RefWorks.

Format bibliographies and manuscripts in seconds – this saves hours of typing time and decreases the number of errors in creating tedious bibliographies. Easily make changes to your paper and reformat in seconds.

Import references from a variety of databases using the already created Import Filters.

Manage Alerts – RefWorks has incorporated a RSS feed reader to allow you to establish links to your favorite RSS feeds and import data from those feeds directly into RefWorks.

Searching your RefWorks database is fast and easy – RefWorks automatically creates author, descriptor and periodical indexes when importing so you just click on the word to perform the retrieval. Use Quick Search to search all fields for the most comprehensive results or Advanced Search to narrow your search to specific terms and fields.

Personal use is $100 but my University Library pays subscription, so its free for staff.

2. Usability

Not very easy to use and only really imports files from the web, as its not worth the hassle trying to import stuff you already have in your documents as it is complicated, will only do one record at a time and you have to enter all the info in manually. Uses own citation management links which are not available on 4 out of 5 databases I've tried. Bulk upload options available from some academic databases. It does not work easily with most academic databases I tried ,but the only ones I have not had a problem with are Science Direct and Wiley online library. There is a work around that they suggest which is exporting citations as plain text and uploading to Refworks, but this is overly complicated.

Can use Refgrab-It in some browsers to take web snapshots.

Allegedly Imports refs easily into word using plug in, but I couldn't install the plug in at work as needed admin rights, so would need to ring one of our library technicians to install it for me. Which means extra time delay and messing about.
EDIT: managed to get it to install in Word, using Write -N-Cite, and you have to open it as well as Word, and log in. You have to keep switching between it and Word to cite references. It does this easily but I could not find the option for Harvard format in Word, as it was set to Harvard in Write N Cite but was not presenting the in text references in Word as Harvard. It did however quickly produce a bibliography in Harvard format just not in text citations. It was easy to edit the in text citations, but again it just seemed like a lot of extra messing about.

Can create groups and share documents securely but not very intuitive.

Has RSS feed reader, which is a bit gimmicky and not what I would use a reference management platform for as it doesn't import citations from the RSS feed. I couldn't even get it to take me to the web page of the article. The Yahoo RSS feed reader is much better.

3. Compatibility

It is only fully compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. Which isn't great for me since my main browser is Chrome.

4. Access

The web version has up to unlimited space for records but limits attachments to 5GB. and can be accessed from anywhere.

Results

So in the battle of online reference management platforms, Mendeley is the clear winner for me. Scoring highly on all areas that I use regularly.

UK Higher Education has not been the same since fees were introduced by New Labour in 1998, based on a report commissioned by the Conservatives in 1996. UK Higher Education has grown massively and with that come extra costs, so it seemed it was inevitable that there would be a charge to bridge this gap. Scotland however decided not to introduce fees for native Scottish residents, and even scrapped their graduate endowment.

Scottish Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop said ""We believe access to education should be based on ability to learn, not ability to pay"
In the rest of the UK however, it started off with means tested fees of up to £1000. See The Dearing report. Now we are in the year 2012 and the price of university education is up to a whopping £9000 per year. This time introduced by the coalition government made up of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. There is also the creation of new private universities, like the New College of the Humanities who want to charge £18,000 per year and now the sale of universities to private equity firms.

Who owns our universities? The students pay for them, private companies can create them and sell them. What is to become of our once public Higher Education system? Will the best lecturers/ researchers move to the high paying private sector? Meaning that only the rich will be able to access these great minds? Maybe I shall just move to Scotland so my children don't have to pay what could be mortgage scale fees. It could end up being a choice for our children on whether to get a university education or buy a house. Only the rich will go to university, unless in the future the government continues to gives access to student loans to cover costs and there are still enough public universities left to take them!
Edit : new article by the Guardian Could universities be sold off? raises an interesting perspective about the quality of degrees from private providers with no experience in education.Helen LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10649368919933241222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7283291617085065233.post-59629017448218039002012-04-03T11:54:00.003+01:002012-04-04T09:24:01.876+01:00University A LevelsIn the news at the moment is a story around universities, specifically 'Russell Group' elite universities being given control over A-Levels, by the Education Secretary Michael Gove ...
See here
But this has not gone down well with the teachers or other universities. Here and here .
Is this a case of Gove passing the buck and not wanting to be responsible for a criticized system? Why only give control to the elite universities, when there is no evidence that they are any better at teaching than any other university. Is this another case of the rich and privileged taking control of a public system without fair access for everyone else? The exam boards are not doing a good job hence the move away from them, to the university sector, wait isn't the University of Cambridge a Russell Group university and an current examining board? http://www.cie.org.uk/ Surely if we think they are not doing a good enough job we should be looking outside the Russell Group.
Despite all these criticisms I do believe that all universities should have a say in how to manage A-Levels. They are not working and students just learn how to pass tests and not how to actually learn or think independently. The Access courses were much better structured and gave better preparation for learning and going to university. But changing A-Levels is a big job and will not happen overnight. The government has to give enough time and resources for this to be managed properly by qualified and experienced groups and not just pass the responsibility onto their 'friends'.Helen LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10649368919933241222noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7283291617085065233.post-6588041431067546322012-03-27T14:15:00.000+01:002012-03-27T14:15:51.013+01:00Pedagogic Research ModelRecently we published an Impact guide to Pedagogic Research, with members of the PRF and the Centre for Research informed Teaching.

PBL enables students to learn better and absorb more. One of our PRF members Carolyn Gibbon has done excellent work with colleagues on a PBL toolkit. The website is also building a directory of teachers demonstrating their use of PBL at various universities, please get in touch with them if you have something to share.

With regards to disability "the university has a duty to inform staff appropriately of a students needs" is your system passive or active? Do you just have names in a file or have you checked if your data is up to date and looked at the progress your students are making? It is very important that all students gain access to help when needed so don't let that file sit on a shelf. Some schools have meetings every other month to see what work needs doing and update their information and check on student progress. Don't do it alone! Share the workload and it will make life easier for all involved.

It includes case studies of learning and teaching that support the development of student employability.

HEA guide to pedagogy for employability

Should employability be embedded in the curriculum in every subject or just vocational ones? Should a degree be all a student needs, or should extra measures be taken to ensure employability of students?
